All good points.
I thought they were in present time now. I was thinking of that exact same line by Miles and I guess I thought it was current time because Jack and Kate went back to the island. It's so confusing.
I don't like the way they are disposing of the characters either. It's like they are trying to kill everyone off now. It just doesn't make sense. Doesn't anyone get a happy ending?
So the finale starts at 6pm here on Sunday. Is it 2 hours? I know there's a special with Jimmy Kimmel on afterwards, but I thought that was just an hour so I'm trying to figure out what takes up the other hour and when it comes in at because our local news doesn't come on until 10.

The finale is 2 1/2 hours, and it starts at 7 here in NY. IDK, I would assume Kimmel will be the usual time... midnight or whenever. Maybe I'm wrong, maybe he's on directly afterwards.

I checked this morning, & from 7 to 9 is a recap/interviews with cast members. Then the real finale starts at 9 (ends at 11:30). So I guess the same for you, except an hour earlier for everything.

I was hoping they'd do one of those recaps. That's the only way I ever understand everything.

I saw Jorge Garcia on Fallon. I actually enjoyed his interview better than Kiefer on Leno.

You mean last night? I didn't know he was on Fallon last night... I can't find a link to it. Could you provide one? We DVR Fallon every night because he's always featuring some Lost cast member or something -- he's obsessed with that show -- & last night he interviewed the two execs. But he had some members of the audience pose questions, and it was pretty hilarious. He also his this weekly thing where called "Unnecessary Censorship", and last night's was a special Lost Edition. It's hilarious. I found the video of it. www.youtube.com/watch?v=di3w1yV4Ehg&feature=player_embedded

I'm not sure where it is online, try nbc.com.
Also there's a Jimmy Kimmel special about lost tonight at 11:05, probably 12:05 your time. I've been watching Celebrity Apprentice and just now turned over to Lost and it's still going. I guess I'll watch it later when I can watch it without interruption.

OK... Wow.
OK, so I interpret the Flash-sideways as some sort of Limbo (Not Purgatory) created by the survivors to join them all together and prepare them to enter Heaven. Last week when Hurley was paying Ana Lucia, he asked Desmond if she was coming too and he responded, "She's not ready yet." I guess that also explains why Michael wasn't there either (has to pay for his sins a little more in Purgatory -- otherwise known as the island), but it doesn't explain why Mr. Eko and Walt weren't there. Anyway, I thought the ending was absolutely beautiful, emotional, and poignant (Jack's eye opening = first scene of series. His eye closing = final scenes of the series -- awesome!); however, it'll take me a couple days (and probably a second viewing) to figure out if I really loved it or not.
It seems like they put too much weight into the sideways universe rather than the five previous seasons chock-full of mythology and unanswered mysteries. And there were tons of character resolutions and emotional resolutions, which was great (the best moments were when their memories came back... esp. Claire/Charlie), but where are all the big answers about the Island (like... what the hell is it???)? It seemed like the finale was geared toward the more casual fans, which was kind of disappointing. It was definitely a more character-driven finale, which I guess is what Cuse and Lindelof meant when they said that the finale goes back to Lost's "roots".
Other problems I had were: -The fight between Smokey and Jack felt a bit out of place for this show... like a misfit sentence in an otherwise fluid essay. -Even though the scenes were amazing, the revelations of their island memories seemed to come so perfunctorily and automatically. -Sayid and Shannon??? Seriously, WTF?!? Their romance was literally my least favorite subplot in Season 1.
Some looming questions I have (maybe you can help me out) are:
1) Jacob was able to "bring" them to the island by touching them; but, how was he able to leave the Island to do this if he was protecting it? 2) What about The Wheel? And how did Widmore's electromagnetic device send Desmond into different time zones? 3) What about Widmore??? 4) We didn't see Desmond, Hurley, Rose, Bernard, Kate, Lapidus, Miles, Richard, or Sawyer die on the Island, so why were they at the church with the rest of them that died? 5) Was the sideways universe solely in their minds only? Or were their spirits actually connecting with each other? Their bodies are dead -- gone, right? 6) So Jack's son never actually existed? Everything created was a means to get reconnected with everyone else? 7) What about the Island's fertility problem? 8) Why was Penny at the church if she never actually set foot on the island?
I think if you cared about the characters more than the mysteries, then you probably loved the finale. I thought the scenes with Kate and Charlie helping to deliver the baby, Locke forgiving Ben, and Sawyer/Juliet's revelation in the sideways universe are some of the best scenes in television history.
I still don't know what to think. I guess I'm satisfied. I loved it while watching it, but as time goes by, I realize maybe it wasn't as good as I originally thought because: 1) the ending was a bit cheesy. 2) still so many unanswered questions.
BTW, didn't it feel like you were watching The Lord of the Rings a little bit?

Just to expand on what I wrote last night, I would have given it a A-... until Christian showed up. The explanation wasn't one I was hoping for. So I give it a B+. I expected that the final payoff would be that the alternate reality was a result of some sort of time travel event that lead to the island being destroyed before the survivors were pulled to it which therefore sends their lives on the track, which we saw in the alternate reality flashes. There wasn't really an explanation as to why these people were able to create their own little "afterlife world" anyhow. It seemed a little cheep. I was pretty annoyed at the end when Desmond told Jack, "It doesn't matter what happens here", almost saying that all of the Island's mysteries meant nothing and it was just about finding each other.
Oh, and another question left unanswered... What about Hurley's numbers???
Also, I would have liked to have seen some character interaction between Locke and Boone in the church, but you can't have everything I guess.

I took the sideways story as the same as you did. I missed that line by Desmond last week. I'm still wondering why none of the Others were there at the end.
Btw, I still haven't watched it all. I saw the last half hour then started rewatching from the beginning so I've only seen the first and last half hours.
I did feel like they left a lot of unanswered questions.
I still don't understand how Jacob was able to leave or really any of his story. That one confuses me.
I don't understand the Wheel or Whitmore either. They killed Whitmore off way too easily. that bothers me.
I didn't pick up that everyone was dead right away and none of them had aged so are we to believe they all died in the plane crash and had been living in pergatory? That's kinda the way I take it.
I was wondering about Jack's son too. It didn't make any sense to introduce him if he didn't exist. Btw, did you happen to notice that was the same kid that played young Michael Scofield?
I forgot about the fertility problem. So does that mean Sun and Jin never had a kid or were never pregnant?
I forgot about Penny not being on the island. Good call. Was she ever near there? I didn't think so.
I never liked Lord of the Rings so I can't really compare, but overall I didn't care for this season. I just was never pleased with a lot of the explanations given. Although that might be because I didn't fully understand it. I'm still thinking about going back and watching the entire series.
Did they ever really explain the time travel? If they did then I didn't get it.
Before these past few episodes, did they ever mention the light on the island before? I don't remember it and I wasn't real impressed that they threw that in towards the end of the series. Like we need more strange things that require explanation?
I guess I'm just disappointed that everyone turned out to be dead in the end. I think I even would have preferred that it all be a dream than how it turned out. Just not one of the endings I had imagined. I would have bought a few of them being dead, but not all.

I was wondering why Jack's son looked so cot damn familiar!!!
I don't get how Jacob was able to leave either.
No, Sun and Jin's child is real!
I wish they explained the time travel more too. That sucked.
I agree with you about The Light... the way they threw it in there at the end.
So, which finale did you enjoy more... 24 or Lost?

I ran into this blog post on Entertainment Weekly about the cheapness of the finale that I actually was thinking, but since he explains it so well, I'll just quote him:
Ok, what about the rules they've been busy laying out this season, like, Desmond is the Failsafe, and is the only one who can survive all that electromagnetic energy stuff, so he is the only one who can remove the Magic Plug deep in the Magic Glowing Well - oh wait, Jack can put it back and not get hurt, and (I assume) magically float out of the Glowing Well so we can have a Vincent moment of his eye shutting in the bamboo so WE REALLY KNOW IT'S OVER (like everyone didn't see that coming a mile away???) Desmond is free to go home? Why isn't he on the plane that everyone else is on and really has no chance in hell of getting off the ground on the Monty Python and The Holy Grail runway if this is really the REALITY TIMELINE??? Oh wait, there's a boat - Desmond can leave on that like he got here on one. But isn't that Smokey's boat? Where did it come from, and why didn't Smokey leave earlier? WHAT DO YOU MEAN IT DOESN'T MATTER???
Entire Sideways Timeline = Purgatory that Desmond the Messenger of the Island had to beat everyone in the Sideways world either emotionally, or physically for them to "awaken" to their island memories which are mostly in the future in the other timeline, so Jack could accept he was dead, because "there is no NOW HERE", and "this is a place that you made together so you could find one another"... WITH WHAT? My Playdough Fun Factory?
Inconsistencies?
Semi-Awakened Sideways Jack: "I need to go see my son...." Awakened Sideways Locke: "You don't have a son...." Semi-Awakened Sideways Jack: "What?" Awakened Sideways Locke: "You don't have a son, Jack."
So basically the writers are laughing at me for spending an entire season investing in characters that really don't exist. PSYCH! Thanks for putting that before Sun and Jin's ultrasound being happy moment, and knowing they're going to have a daughter together even though they know they drowned together on the island (in the future), and Juliet and Sawyer's Apollo Bar, getting coffee moment that we've been waiting for ALL SEASON LONG - just so I know none of that really happened.
